The Birth of Hats For Happiness

I have been asked a few times now how it is that Hats For Happiness got to come into being. Here is the story.

When I went through my first round of Chemotherapy and my hair began to fall out, being a college student I was looking for a way to cover my head. I was often wearing a black hoodie to cover up my having bald spots (I tried to keep my hair as long as I could). I went over the options that were available. I could wear wigs, but they are expensive with a very nice wig running in the hundreds. They are also hot and I love in Florida and was concerned about that. I thought about bandannas, and while they are not expensive, nor hot, I felt that sometimes I would want to not have anyone know I was even bald. and with the bandanna, isn't much you can hide.

In discussing this dilemma with my family and friends, I would over and over hear "I have some hats I could give you" and they would produce 4 or 5 hats at a time that they had. Hats they owned and most of the time never even wore. hats they got at conventions, promotions, as gifts, as souvenirs.

I started collecting these hats, and I would put them on one by one and if it was a silly hat it would make me laugh, if it was a baseball cap it would make me think of the logo or saying that was on it.

It got me to thinking, if the people I know all have a few hats they have never worn, maybe a LOT of other people also have hats they are not wearing.

I found that people that owned companies were more then willing to give me a hat or two with their company logos. I came up with an idea, what if a person when they were doing chemo could pick out a hat right there in the doctors office. What if there was a hat rack, with numerous hats, wigs, bandannas that patients could choose from to take with them. They could take a silly hat, a hat that they would never wear in public, but when they needed a lift from fighting the good fight, they could put that hat on and think of how it is a special hat and maybe it will make them smile for the only time that day.

One of the things that was very upsetting to me was having my picture taken. I was very self conscious about this. I found that when I was wearing a hat, the picture wasn't as jarring as my having no hair. I was able to smile in photos, and often smiled because I was wearing a hat.

This is the story of the birth of Hats For Happiness.

I Like Everything - Cute Little Girl Video

I am posting this as a post but I am also going to add this as a permanent video on the blog here. I think that this is something that can help any and all of us to be more positive and learn to "like" the little things.

What a Day!!!

Ok folks, great to see you tuned again for the Adventures of CancerGirl and SuperDog.

Today was such a stressful, interesting, fun, exciting day. I know that is a lot of adjectives.

It started this morning with the stressful. SH got out of his job at that place with the big trucks and called the lair to tell me that as we had discussed last evening, he would go to SuperWalMart (Where else would SuperHubby, CancerGirl and SuperDog shop?) and purchase a SuperPoweredRoomCoolingMachine or SPRCM (known as an Air Conditioner in the MortalWorld). CancerGirl was VERY VERY happy about this. It has been hot here in Paradise, and going through chemo and having to be getting sick when it is hot makes everything 100 times worse.

SuperHubby came home with the SPRCM and he brought it into the bedroom. SH and CG decided to install the SPRCM at the moment SH came into the house from work. He was very hot, he had worked all night then drove home in the heat. He wanted the put the SPRCM in as soon as possible. Now CG is well aware that doing any type of project like this in the Lair with SH always is a stressful event. CG has the experience of the last 15 years being with SH to know that when this situation arises, there will be an argument. Even SD was standing in the doorway of the sleeping quarters of the Lair saying "This is gonna be good, it always ends in chaos when they get together to do something"

SH has one way he thinks things should be done, and CG always thinks he is wrong about that. CG needs to work on this, as even SuperHeroes are not perfect. No matter what it is, CG seems to get in the way more then she helps.

It began years ago with a Computer Desk that was purchased for CG as a Christmas Gift from SH. He was putting it together and had the boards with screws sticking out of them on the bed waiting for glue to dry in the thingies the stick the things together, you know what I mean, right. Well anyway, CG (Clarice at the time as her SuperHero status was unknown at the time) came into the room and knocked the boards over and broke off about 10 of the 20 screws. It broke the computer desk pieces beyond repair. It was ruined. Clarice took the entire thing back to WalMart and while they didn't return the entire computer desk, they did find one that had been returned and they replaced the broken boards and gave us all the extra screws so it got taken care of.

Ok back to the SPRCM. When we last left the fateful pair, they had taken the SPRCM out of the box, and CG and SH placed the side thingies that fit the rest of the window onto the sides of it. The first order of business was to get the old SPRCM out of the window. CG had the brilliant idea to unplug it and drop it out the window (the window is about 4 1/2 feet from the ground). We did this and the SPRCM fell to the ground. SD said "I hope that the GuardianDogs (GD) outside weren't under that window" although she secretly hoped that at least the girl one was since she doesn't like her anyway, SD can sometimes have EvilThoughts that she has to fight against, and this was one of those times.

We then placed the new SPRCM into the window, with CG holding the SPRCM in the window. CG had the thought and mentioned that maybe one of us should be outside, but both SH and CG dismissed that thought immediately. Because we are both SuperHeroes, we both see no need to read instructions that come with anything that comes into the Lair. SH even has a saying to that fact that goes "Instructions!!! We don't need no stinking instructions" (said in his best german accent). Because we didn't read the instructions, we didn't realize nor did we take note of the piece of metal that we pulled out of the box and put aside. Because we did this, when we put the SPRCM in the window and lowered the window, the SPRCM wouldn't sit in the window correctly. SH notices 4 small holes along the top of the SPRCM and comes up with the idea to screw long screws into the holes (they looked like screws belonged in the holes) and when we screwed in the first one it only went in about 1/4 of a inch. After screwing in the second one he realized this was not going to work. He then noticed the metal piece they had previously removed from the box also had similar sized and exactly the same distance placed holes in it, and was shaped perfectly like it would sit on top of the SPRCM and hold it securely in the window without the fear of it falling out. They then decided the would remove the SPRCM from the window and put this piece on. SH said "Ok, you hold the SPRCM and I will lift the window up since the lock things can be hard to get" CG said "OK". SH grabbed the window locks, CG had the SPRCM and while SH was lifting the window the thought occurred to CG that she saw a piece of foam too that went with it. She took one hand off the SPRCM and well, it fell out the window. SD said "OHH SH is not gonna be happy with that". CG and SH spent a good 30 seconds just looking at each other. CG then went outside to retrieve the SPRCM.

Remember the old SPRCM that we earlier dropped out the window? Well guess what.... the new SPRCM fell directly on top of that, and fell off it and onto the ground. CG picked it up and lifted it to the window (now it could be asked why it is that CG is the one lifting the SPRCM, but well she ran out there first and she grabbed it first, and well she sometimes does things she shouldn't do and then pays for it later). Upon inspection, the only damage was a dent on the back of it. CG said "I will put it right back into the box and return it to SWM, of course SH would have none of it. He said "You broke it, now live with the consequences" It did mess up the side things that slide out to the edges of the window, but not to the point it couldn't be fixed. CG held the SPRCM in the window while SH attached the metal piece and repositioned it in the window and lowered the window on it. CG then came in and they turned it on (thank god it worked beautifully) and left the room to get cool.

Because SH believes in the SuperPower of Laughter just as much as CG does, when he was at SWM he purchased 2 stand up DVDs for CG. CG wanted to watch them immediately and was especially excited about the Robin Williams DVD. Below you can find a link to Amazon where if you purchase through that link part of your purchase contributes to Hats For Happiness, so please shop through those links.

Here is a link to some of the material on the movie. Please beware that some of it is a little off color and uses some foul language. This is not the Robin Williams of Patch Adams, but it was a awesome stand up set and the DVD has awesome bonus features with clips from about 12 different concerts throughout his career

After both CG and SH sat down and watched the Robin Williams DVD SH decided that he was going to go lay down and take a nap. SH was still pretty annoyed with CG since the SPRCM incident. CG hates when SH is mad at her, so she was pretty upset. She decided that she would do what she had been thinking of doing for a few weeks now, she decided she would shave SD down. SD didn't necessarily like the idea, but since she doesn't have much choice when it comes to things like this, she allowed it.

CG began shaving SD and right in the middle of it her clippers died on her, they just stopped. She tried everything to revive them but it was to no avail. SD at this point looked quite silly, and there was nothing that any amount of using scissors was going to fix, This upset CG even worse then she was before, because now she cant even take SD out with her when she goes out because well quite honestly, SD looks downright dumb. She has parts shaved, parts not shaved, she just looks silly. Of course because we used the money in the treasury (bank account) to get the SPRCM, we don't have the money to get a new pair of clippers, and with the way things look right now we wont have the money any time soon with the cost of CG special from the laboratory vitamins (prescriptions) we run very close to the bone financially. CG is trying to find a used pair for sale but isn't having much luck, hopefully something comes through because CG cant go out without her SideKick SuperDog.

Ok everyone, that is all for tonight, more on the adventures of CancerGirl tomorrow. Don't forget to click the GoogleAD links on the bottom of the page to contribute to Hats for Happiness, and check out the Amazon links to purchase items through their website with the proceeds also going to Hats For Heroes.

CancerGirl Flies Again

Hi Everyone, I know I havent posted a blog in a VERY long time. The reasons why I hadnt posted was because of some people who are no longer in my life being judgemental of me and my blog. I heard comments like "Does she have multiple personalities??" and "Is what she talks about for real??" and if I wrote about even the slightest conflict with anyone in my life, family, friends, whoever it was seen as my "trashing " them so I stopped writing because I truly felt like if I couldn't be honest about my thoughts and feelings then I dont want to blog. If i have to worry about what every single person I know having a issue with something I write I dont want the added stress of that.

What is the solution? In the past the solution I have choose was to just not write my blog, then when I thought about going back to it I was already pretty much done with tratment and there wasnt much to write about. That was quite some time ago, and things have gotten a bit more complicated.

The solution I have come upon at this point is simply to write my blog, not worry about what anyone else thinks. If someone thinks I have "dogged them" in my blog, that is not my responsibility. People bring their own perceptions to every situation, and how CG would see and perceive a situation is completely different how the other person in that situation would perceive it. The only thing I can say to someone who feels as if I have done them a diservice in my blog is that they have a few options. They can comment on the blog about their own perception and view of the situation or comment, which I more then welcome, as I am always willing to look at my own perception of things to see if I may be wrong (I often am wrong, but the great thing about being wrong, is that every time you are wrong it is an opprotunity to learn something new) so feel free to comment. They can also choose not to read my blog, in which case I am ok with that too, as I feel that noone should be forced to read something they dont like (and in the words of Charlie Harper of Two and a Half Men fame "Why would I want to be friends with someone who talks about me like that?") , and as I said, I would be perfectly fine with that and respect that decision. Their other option of course is to hate me forever and decide that they are going to begin their own evil plot to take out CancerGirl, and to those people I have only one thing to say "you know not what my kriptonite is, and without that knowledge your EvilSuperPowers are no match for the SuperPowers that CancerGirl has in her arsinal.

Ok, now that we got all the business aspect of CG returning to the Blogosphere, on to the fun part of CancerGirls mission in life. Do you all remember what that mission is? You don't? Wow CancerGirl has been gone for some time now. CancerGirls mission is to spread the SuperPowers of Happiness and Love and Joy and Laughter to the world.

I am not going to go all somber and depressing and get into a bunch of sad stuff today, I will just say that I will tomorrow update this blog with some of what is going on with CancerGirl medically.

SD and CG have been going to school for the last number of months. CG is now finishing her first summer class (it is done on Monday) and starts another the week after next. After that class she will then be off to start looking at what she wants to do about where to go for my next step in this process. There are a few options, with the best being able to just stay at the school I am at now to get my masters degree.

Ok I dont know if everyone knows where we left off or not, but here is a recap of some of the abbreviations that CG uses in her Bulletin (otherwise known as this Blog).

A Handy Dandy Guide To The ABbreviations In CancerGirl's Blog

CG=CancerGirl

SD= Service Dog or Super Dog

SH=Service Husband (one who assists cancergirl when SD has a day off) or SuperHusband

SW= SuperWife (what CancerGirl tries her best to be)

I will of course update that as more abbreviations are used and added. I know for a fact that there are a few that are not on the list yet.

If you recall CG tends to change the position she writes in, sometimes it is the first person, sometimes the second person, sometimes the third person, now if you are reading a Blog and CG starts speaking in the fourth person please call the authorities because she has truly lost her mind and needs to be stopped.

Dont forget to use the links on my page and click on the ads. CG is doing fundraising for her Hats for Happiness campaign. Right now CG is fundraising in order to set up the things she needs to begin her mission of delivering hats to patients who have lost their hair. We will be asking fro donations of hats in the future but right now we are trying to raise the funds to get the kinks worked out. CG has a few things in the works in order to raise funds, and already has things such as her CafePress online store ( http://www.cafepress.com/ItsCancerGirl) , where you can purchase Official CancerGirl items. More items will be listed soon.

You can also purchase things from Amazon.com through my link and Ads on my page here Amazon.com where a percentage of every purchase made through that link goes toward the cause. I am also pretty certain that if you purchase items for your IPad and Kindle through the link that you can then have them sent to the device so if you purchase books for your Kindle you can also contribute.

Also dont forget to click on the GoogleAds at the beginning and end of CG posts, Hats For Happiness also gets money for every click, wether you purchase anything through that link or not.

If you are not a Follower (CG calls them Spotters) of my Blog, please sign up to be a follower. The more followers CG has the more clout she will have in her fundraising efforts.

Ok now that that is taken care of. On to the meat of the blog. The news that you all tune in to hear. What adventures did CancerGirl go on today?

Today CG had lunch with SFL (SuperFriendLynne). She had Caesar Penne Pasta with Grilled Chicken. SFL and I both ordered the same thing, it was the special of the day. They brought out our food and CG stabbed her fork into a piece of that yummy looking chicken (because CG has been getting sick from chemo, yet is still always hungry, she was ravenous at lunch LOL) and bit into it to get a mouthfull of cold chicken. CG should have been smarter and realized that they would not have put lettuce in a hot dish which is what both CG and SFL expected with the word "grilled chicken" idea, should have been described as "chilled chicken". We ate and talked of many things, with CG eating more then SFL did (she was definately not impressed with the cold chicken or ceasar dressing).

We then got the iPad out and went to log on and OH NOO there was no signal. SFL called her hubby who tried to help over the phone (although she did try to coerce him into coming to the restraunt to fix it immediately, even played the "CG wants to play with the IPad" card, he didnt bite) and we played with trying to get it to work for the rest of the time.

CG had to leave lunch with SFL and go see SuperShrink. If you all remember, she has been seeing SuperShrink for 10 years now. Today she discussed her issues with friendship, issues with my anger which has been getting more and more common and more and more short fused. CG is having a very hard time with controlling her anger lately. She was feeling more and more like a monster. CG tried for a very long time to never get angry. She grew up with extended family members having issues with addiction and anger, and felt that anger never made anything any better. What she was not taking into account, mainly because she was a little kid, was that anger is not in itself bad, it is a emotion, and emotions, no matter what they are, are neither good or bad, they just are, They are expressions of our concious and subconcious mind. We all have a part of ourselves which we are not aware of, desires, feelings, motivations, fears, things that dont become apparent to use until our mind has come to the conclusion that it is ready to handle those things. Many of these things get worked out in dreams, while we sleep our brains go through a cleansing that helps refresh and reset itself. It sorts out the day, compartmentalizes the things it needs to, and prepares for a new day of input.

SuperShrink helped CG to realize that she has quite a bit to be angry about right now. That she cannot just expect the SuperPower of Happiness to be at full strength all the time. That sometimes even the most civil minded SuperHeros get angry. Superman often got angry at his nemesis and when he did you knew it. CG is going to try very hard to work out some of that anger, but when she spoke to her Oncologist and he explained that the chemicals in the drugs used for Chemotherapy can and often do cause personality changes, things like unexpected and surprising laughter, sudden unexpected crying spells, outburts of explosive anger. That there is actually a name for it in the cancer community, it is called Chemo Brain. I am hoping that when I am done with this round of chemo that I will be a little more able to handle my emotions.

Ok Folks, I have rambled on here long enough for now and it has been a few trips back and forth to the lairs restroom due to the poisoning she got at the hands of her arch nemesis the Evil Power of Cancer, so for now CG is going to watch her TV and find something to help her channel the SuperPower of Laughter for the evening.
